This fishery extends to close on 3 miles and is predominantly double banked down five Beats of its length, with a single bank fishery on the Beat known as No. 5 (Lower).

The fishery is located in possibly the most scenic part of Herefordshire close to the Welsh borders being approximately 16 miles west of Hereford and approximately 6 miles from Hay-on-Wye.

In the village of Whitney-on-Wye there is a public house known as the Boat Inn and a short distance away is the Egon Ronay restaurant/pub the Rhydspence Inn placed on the border of Wales and England. Both these properties offer useful eating places when enjoying a rest or break from the fishing.

  Gillie
The fishery offers the services of a part-time gillie who will be willing to help and advise where best to fish over the length of the fishery.

  Fishing Huts
Virtually every Beat on the fishery has the facilities of a fishing hut, and with Beats 3 and 4 there are lavatory facilities also provided.

  Access
Vehicular access is offered close to the river bank except for Beat 6, with regular bank maintenance being carried out on all Beats by the estate staff keeping the river banks generally clean to enable clear fishing of the primary pools. Bank fishing can be administered on each Beat, though throughout the fishery there are some excellent fly streams to keep the interest of the discerning fly fisherman.

There is known to be some quite good brown trout fishing in some of the streamy sections of the fishery.

  Season
The Salmon fishing season is from the 26th January to the 17th October.

  Rules of the Fishery
It would be expected that you undertake all fishing in a sportsmanlike manner, and will at all times abide by the Environment Agency's Rules covering the use of bait, and that hen fish shall be returned after the 1st September.

Contact should be made with the gillie if you will not be fishing your water by 2.00 p.m.

  Letting Arrangements
The fishery is divided into five rotating Beats, with a 2 p.m. change-over of Beats.

Each Beat is let to two rods per day with it encouraged for parties to fish in pairs so as to avoid difficulties in compatibility of fishing tenants.

  Rent
£300.00 per rod throughout the season, (being £250.00 + V.A.T. plus a small administration charge).

  Catch Records

The Whitney Court Fishery has not been fished to its full potential for many years. In the past records have been as high as 269 (1972) although through the rest of the 70's the catch averaged around 100, but the number of Salmon caught in the River Wye has been reducing over the last decade.

Nevertheless, this fishery still has great potential when fished with a full compliment of rods.
